A few years ago we took a little escapade to White Oak Pastures in Georgia. We grabbed a plane at Denver International in late winter. We left behind a frostbitten Colorado, where the thermometer's flirting with a chilly -20, and bam! We land in the snug embrace of a 50-degree day at White Oak. What a welcome upgrade!
About 8 hours of planes and rental cars and there we were at the farm’s general store. There on the counter a quirky little sign about an 'eagle tour' catches our eye. We poke around, asking about it, and everyone's trying to keep a straight face. The secret? Well, let's just say the farm's chickens were on the eagle's daily menu, and not in a good way. Will, the head honcho, gives us this grin and says something to the effect of, 'Those damn eagles, they’re eaten my ASS UP!'
Turns out, White Oak is an eagle hotspot. For the county. I mean, these birds were everywhere, like feathery celebrities doing what ever they want on the farm tour. And the farm folk? They were pretty chill about the whole thing nature's nature, right?
Nowadays White Oak teamed up with a local third party crew for their chicken biz. They were able to find a partner business in the area to raise the birds the same way out on pasture.
So, there's your dose of farm gossip from us – just another day in the life of a rancher.
